Athletes who grow their own food often do so for a variety of reasons, including the desire to eat fresh, healthy produce, to save money on groceries, and to reduce their environmental impact. Gardening can also be a therapeutic activity that helps athletes to relax and de-stress after training or competition. But the biggest reason is the competitive edge they get by eating high-quality food.

One notable example of an athlete who grows his own food is NBA star LeBron James. James has long been an advocate for healthy eating and has been known to grow his own produce in a garden at his home in California. In an interview with Men’s Health, James discussed the benefits of growing his own food, saying, “I love being able to go out to the garden and pick my own vegetables for dinner. It’s a great way to get some exercise and eat healthy at the same time.”

Another athlete who grows his own food is former NFL player turned farmer Joe Jurevicius. Jurevicius, who played for teams such as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Cleveland Browns, now runs a farm in Ohio where he grows a variety of vegetables and raises chickens and goats. In an interview with The Cleveland Plain Dealer, Jurevicius talked about how growing his own food has helped him to stay healthy and maintain his weight after retiring from football. He also discussed the environmental benefits of farming, saying, “I think it’s important for people to understand where their food is coming from and how it’s grown. And with the way the environment is changing, I think it’s important for us to do our part to try to reduce our carbon footprint and live a more sustainable lifestyle.”

Other athletes who have spoken about the benefits of growing their own food include Olympic gold medalist and professional runner Molly Huddle, who has a garden at her home in Rhode Island, and professional triathlete Sarah True, who has a small farm in New Hampshire, where she grows vegetables and raises chickens.

Marjory Wildcraft, founder of The Grow Network https://thegrownetwork.com spent time with eh Tarahumara Indians, who are the world’s fastest long-distance runners. “I brought them gifts of corn from the US, but they politely declined it, saying it would make them weak”. Wildcraft says they prefer their own homegrown food.

Growing your own food can be a rewarding and fulfilling experience for athletes, and it can also have numerous health and environmental benefits. In addition to providing fresh, nutritious produce, gardening can be a great way for athletes to get exercise, reduce stress, and connect with the natural world. As more and more athletes discover the edge it gives them in competition and the joys of producing their own food, it is likely that this trend will continue to grow and thrive.

If you want to get started improving your athletic abilities by growing your own food, the absolute best way is to work with Marjory Wildcraft.
